Brothers,

Masonic ritual notes that among the duties of the Junior Warden are;

• To observe the sun at Meridian,
• Call the craft from labor to refreshment,
• Superintend them during the hours thereof,
• And see that they return to their labor in due season.

The phrase “in due season” simply means at the right, appropriate, or appointed time.  It suggests that while something may not happen immediately, it will occur exactly when it is meant to, or when the conditions are perfectly ready.

My brothers…not only is the season to return to labor upon us, that time is passed due.

It should be no secret that our membership numbers have declined dramatically over the past 5-6 years.  The unfortunate effects of that decline include fewer active members and even fewer new members added to our rolls.  While other lodges have seen a resurgence over this same period, Smithtown Lodge has experienced a gradual, apathetic falloff.

This is not a character flaw of the Lodge or any of its members, but a measurable disruption in the systems that drive motivation and emotional response.  As if the Lodge itself is suffering from a collective burnout scenario.  Fortunately, acknowledging this systemic phenomenon, and taking the necessary measures to treat the underlying causes can help restore genuine interest, meaningful engagement, and emotional responsiveness.

My hope is that there are still Brothers out there that care enough about Freemasonry, Smithtown Lodge and the ideals of making good men better through our shared experiences.  That together we can rebuild upon the solid foundation that still exists and restore our beloved lodge.

Join us and engage in this restoration.  Play a role that helps shape our future, both collectively and as individuals.  Within two short weeks the sound of the Master’s gavel will once again ring out in the East, calling us all to return to our Masonic labors.  Will that sound resonate with you?

Brothers, we want you back in lodge!

Fraternal regards,

W: . Hugh C. Dungey, DSA

Junior Warden
